Grave Ink

This near-black, velvety cocktail leans bitter and dry, with cold brew and amaro building depth over a clean vodka base. It’s stark, minimal and intensely aromatic. This cocktail is made using Ketel One Vodka and Amaro Montenegro.

Ingredients

Serves 1
coconut palm sugar, for rim
¼ oz (7.5 ml) Simple Syrup, plus more for rim*
1½ oz (45 ml) Ketel One Vodka
½ oz (15 ml) Amaro Montenegro
¾ oz (22.5 ml) cold brew concentrate**
2 dashes Angostura bitters
1 pinch activated charcoal (optional)***

Instructions

  1. To prepare rim, place a few spoonfuls of coconut palm sugar on a plate. Dip a coupe glass in a small amount of Simple Syrup and then into sugar. In a cocktail shaker, combine ¼ oz (7.5 ml) Simple Syrup, vodka, amaro, cold brew, bitters and activated charcoal, if using. Fill with ice and shake for 20 seconds. Fine strain into rimmed glass and serve.
  2. *1:1 ratio of granulated sugar dissolved in boiling water. Allow to cool before using.
  3. ** Cold brew concentrate is available at grocery stores, or make it a day before you need it by combining ¾ oz (22 g) ground coffee and ½ cup (125 ml) cold water. Let steep in refrigerator overnight, then pass through a coffee strainer to remove solids.
  4. *** Activated charcoal will make cocktail inky black instead of slightly translucent.
